Sunday October 1
(16th Sunday After Trinity)
Bible Reading: Matt. 22: 34 - 40
Topic: The Greatest Commandment
Jesus Christ by God's
Wisdom, silenced the question of the resurrection and the Pharisees saw and
wanted to exploit the opportunity to show supremacy over the Sadduccees.
The Pharisees put head
together and selected one of their best to tempt Jesus with a question.
It was a question which
had been a subject for serious debate for centuries. The Pharisees had
over 613 commandments in the law - 248
positive and 365 negative. It was really difficult to memorize all the
commandments much less keep them.
Their century old problem
was summarised in two quotations from the Old Testament (Deut. 6: 5 &
Liviticus 19: 18) love for God and love for man.
This is the type of love
that God requires all men to exercise.
Christians who are God's children
are to manifest this love in all their relationships with their neighbours (1 John
4: 20)
This is where a good
number have failed
We are waiting for the day
we will see God to show Him how much we love Him; but we forget that God
measures our love for Him in the way we relate in love to our neighbours (Matt.
25: 42)
How you love God is shown in how you love your neighbour
Prayer
Oh God, help me to love
You wholeheartedly and my neighbour as myself, Amen.
Memory Verse Matt. 22: 40
"On these two
commandments hang all the law and the Prophets"
