Bible Reading: Eph. 4: 17 - 24
Topic: Carry Over Is Not Allowed
(Part One)
The term 'carry over' is
commonly used among undergraduates.
It is a situation where a
student who fails a coursework is allowed to carry the course over to the next
level in a new academic session.
This comes with a lot of
inconvenience and the ultimate is that the student may graduate with a poor
grade in the final examination.
Today's passage talks
about putting off the old man, (life before coming to Christ) and putting on
the new man (life after coming to Christ).
Unlike the academic world,
carry over of the old man into the new life is not only prohibited but is
disastrous to our relationship with Christ.
Some features of the old
man which Paul lists here include futile thinking, spiritual ignorance which
leads to hardening of heart, sexual sins e.t.c. (vs. 17 - 24) a list he
expanded fully in Col. 3: 5 - 9
The old man is darkness,
the new man is Light and light and darkness have no meeting point.
The Bible cautions
".... let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares
us and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:
1)
The Christian race cannot
be successfully run with any carry over. Check yourself
Prayer
My Father and my God, I
come to You today humbly kneeing on my
knees and asking for Your Grace to help me run the race of life without any baggage
from my past. I commit to You through Your Only Son Jesus Christ and I want to work
for You now and forever more, Amen.
Memory Verse Eph. 4: 24
"And that ye put on
the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."
