Bible Reading: Gen. 21: 22 - 34
Topic: Mind What You Swear For
God so prospered Abraham
that Abimelech the King of the Philistines where he dwelt acknowledged and
decided to enter into a covenant with him and not deal falsely with him or his
offspring in future.
When God's dealing with
you is not yet shown to unbelievers, you needn't fret or be anxious. Call on
Him to manifest it. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity, Jabez cried out to God
to bless him and God did (1 Chron. 4: 9 - 10)
Looking critically at the
action of Abraham in swearing before King Abimelech and entering into a
covenant with him, there's a lesson to learn.
We should not be quick to
enter into agreements with others especially with people we don't know or have
no knowledge of who they really are and other subject matters that can be
controversial or prove difficult to handle by our succeeding generations.
Abraham thought he could
help Abimelech's posterity to deal with his own descendants in peace and
prosperity but far from it. History was to prove this as most unhelpful and
wrong.
Prayer
Lord , help me to avoid
entering into treaties and covenants You have not approved for me, Amen.
Memory Verse Gen. 21: 23
"Now therefore, swear
unto me (Abimelech) here by God that thou (Abraham) wilt not deal falsely with
me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son: but according to the kindness that
I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me and the land wherein thou has
sojourned."
